College Ministry

The staple of our campus ministry is our Sunday evening student service held at 6:00 p.m. whenever UM is in session (last Sunday in August through mid-December; mid-January through early May).  The student Eucharist (communion service) is followed by a free student supper on the Chapel patio.

We are here to serve all students at the University of Miami.  The words "Episcopal" and "Lutheran" do not describe whom we are here to serve; rather they describe what we have to offer.  Any and all students who are interested in joining us are welcome.

NEW THIS FALL:  In fall semester 2015 we are introducing a new feature to our campus ministry: Christian yoga.  For those of you who are familiar with yoga, you know that yoga doesn't have a religion, but does incorporate meditation into its practice.  For those of you unfamiliar with yoga, I can tell you how surprised I was to learn that this is a real workout!  Yoga promotes strength and flexibility.  In the West we tend to de-emphasize the meditation part of yoga. Here at St. Bede's we will have a bit more meditation than is typical in the West at the beginning and the end of each session.  Many of the principles of yoga are easily translatable into a Christian meditative context.  Our meditations will draw on Scripture and other Christian and Jewish sources.  Nevertheless, ALL students are welcome to join us, whether or not you have any religious affiliation at all.

The Chaplain, Father Frank Corbishley, is available for counseling for all students, regardless of whether or not they worship at the Chapel.  Father Frank is one of several Chaplains, of various denominations, on campus; the Chaplains share duties such as giving invocations or benedictions at graduation ceremonies.  From time to time Father Frank is invited to speak at campus events or debates.

We feel a particular responsibility to be an outspoken Christian community that seeks to uphold the equality of gay and lesbian people in Church as well as in secular society.

While there are several religious organizations on campus, most do not have a formal worship space.  The Chapel of the Venerable Bede is the only Christian chapel on campus.  As such, we are sometimes called upon to do a funeral or memorial service for a  member of the University community.

Because of the Chapel’s excellent acoustics, many students from the Frost School of Music use the Chapel for their recitals.  Music fraternities and sororities also like to perform in the Chapel.

The Chapel's second-floor student lounge is a cozy space where students can study, watch movies, or just hang out.

The Children's Bereavement Center has a young adult bereavement group that meets in the Chapel's student lounge at 7:00 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month.

The UM/Canterbury Preschool, serving the entire University community, is a partnership between the University and the Chapel.
