College Ministry

The staple of our campus ministry is our Sunday evening student service held at 6:00 p.m. whenever UM is in session (last Sunday in August through mid-December; mid-January through early May).  The student Eucharist (communion service) is followed by a free student supper on the Chapel patio.  Our Sunday evening student service is done in partnership with a local Lutheran pastor, Pastor Arnold Perry of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Coral Gables.

We are here to serve all students at the University of Miami.  The words "Episcopal" and "Lutheran" do not describe whom we are here to serve; rather they describe what we have to offer.  Any and all students who are interested in joining us are welcome.

Every year students graduate and leave us and new students join us.  The nature of the student community is constantly in flux.  Therefore, the types of activities we do in addition to the weekly student worship services and weekly student suppers vary from year to year.  In the past, activities have included Bible studies, discussion groups, snorkeling in the Keys, trips to the Everglades, volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, volunteering for Coastal Clean-up, movies in the Chapel library, going to the cinema, visiting the Holocaust Memorial on Miami Beach, a Fair Trade Christmas sale, a St. Baldrick's fundraiser for cancer research,  Mardi Gras parties, etc.  To find out what’s happening this semester, see our Calendar page which is periodically updated.

The Chaplain, Father Frank Corbishley, is available for counseling for all students, regardless of whether or not they worship at the Chapel.  Father Frank is one of several Chaplains, of various denominations, on campus; the Chaplains share duties such as giving invocations or benedictions at graduation ceremonies.  From time to time Father Frank is invited to speak at campus events or debates.

While there are several religious organizations on campus, most do not have a formal worship space.  The Chapel of the Venerable Bede is the only Christian chapel on campus.  As such, we are sometimes called upon to do a funeral    or  memorial   service  for a  member of the University community.             Here we are at the "Blessing of the logo!"

Because of the Chapel’s excellent acoustics, many students from the Frost School of Music use the Chapel for their recitals.  Music fraternities and sororities also like to perform in the Chapel.

The UM/Canterbury Preschool, serving the entire University community, is a partnership between the University and the Chapel.
